Synopsis

While facing his mother’s illness, Oliver (7) clings to his aunt Paloma (26), projecting on her the fantasy of a new mother. As their bond grows, Paloma begins to develop an unwanted maternal instinct, while the birds announce an early farewell.

About the director

Argentine-Costa Rican director and screenwriter. Born in 1989, she studied I mage and Sound Design at the University of Buenos Aires.

Her short film SELVA premiered at the Critics’ Week of the Cannes Film Festival 2017 and was screened in 50 cities receiving awards such as TVS at the Biarritz Festival.

Her first feature film CENIZA NEGRA premiered at the 58th Critics’ Week 2019, becoming the first Costa Rican film to participate in a competitive section of the Cannes Film Festival and to compete for the Golden Camera Award. CENIZA NEGRA has traveled to more than 60 international festivals such as: Mar del Plata, Havana and the Cairo Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Film of the Critics’ Week. CENIZA NEGRA represented Costa Rica in the 93rd edition of the Oscar Awards and the 35th edition of the Goya Awards.

Sofia also works as a continuist and acting coach. She is currently developing her second fiction feature film called MADRE PÅJARO, selected for the Europe-Latin America Co­Production Forum at the San Sebastian Film Festival 2022 and La Fabrique at Cannes 2023.
