STÆR is an independent production company based in Tromsø, the largest city in Norway above the arctic circle. We aim to develop, produce, and co-produce auteur-based films of high artistic quality and relevance. In 2025 we founded our distribution arm, STÆR Distribution.

STÆR (Starlings) are migratory birds that fly together to support and protect each other when they migrate in flocks from Scandinavia to South Europe and back. Together they stay strong and reach their goal after a long and demanding journey. This is the inspiration behind and the heart of STÆR.

STÆR was created to provide new breath for both new and established talents who want to challenge their artistic output. We will discover voices that want to claim their place and challenge traditional conventions of filmmaking. Our goal is to become the biggest arthouse company in Northern Norway and one of the most prolific in the country.

In early 2023, we premiered our first feature documentary Calls from Moscow (Berlinale International Film Festival Forum, Hot Docs and MoMA) and our co-production Hypnosen by Ernst De Geer (winner of three prizes at Karlovy Vary), as well as our first short film Almost Invisible, which was nominated for Best Norwegian Short Film.

Our first delegate feature production, Arru—Norway’s first joik musical directed by Elle Sofe Sara—premiered in the 2026 Berlinale Panorama. The film has been sold to different territories around  the world and it is the first time a Sami female director gets awarded the production grant for a fiction feature film by The Norwegian Film Institute.

We have coproduced Annemarie Jacir’s Palestine 36 (TIFF Gala, shortlist for an Oscar nomination), Nabil Ayouch’s Everybody Loves Touda (Cannes Premiere 2024), Inadelso Cossa’s The Nights Still Smell of Gunpowder (Berlinale Forum 2024, CPH:DOX, MIRAGE, IDFA), Vytautas Katkus’ The Visitor (Winner of Best Director Award in Karlovy Vary’s Main Competition)  Gintarè Parulytè’s Sujip, winner of the Silver Crane for Best Lithuanian Short Film and Ester Martin A Sweetness from Nowhere nominated to the Nordic Competition at CPH:DOX.

We are currently in post-production on Juan Andrés Arango’s Where the River Begins, Levan Koguashvili’s Guria, Carlos Reygadas’ Wake of Umbra, Sofía Quirós Madre Pajaro (winner of TorinoFilmLab Co-production Award 2024), and Lê Bảo’s Hearing.
